a warm welcome Who we are

WELCOME TO IS RUHR

International School Ruhr is proudly situated in Germany’s growing energy capital, Essen, and is the Ruhr’s most established international school supporting international and local families seeking a high quality international education in the area.

We offer inquiry-based learning in all three sections of our school: Early Years, Primary Years and Secondary Years. Our school reflects the philosophy of our owners, the leading Swiss educational group SBW Haus des Lernens AG, which is aligned with the International baccalaureate inquiry methodology, as well as the concept of student agency and the importance of real life context for learning.

IS Ruhr is accredited by the International Baccalaureate to offer the Primary Years Programme – in our Early Years and Primary Years sections for students aged 3 to 12, as well as the Diploma Programme in Grade 11-12. In our Middle Years, students aged from 12 – 16  prepare for the Cambridge IGCSE examinations in Grade 10.

As an IB World School, the International Baccalaureate’s ten Learner Profile attributes are a common language of learning throughout the whole school as we seek to live them and learn by them on a daily basis.

IS Ruhr is a thriving international community of over 30 nationalities. I warmly encourage all parents to get involved in the various events that are held throughout the year to support our students’ learning and our vibrant diversity. We are actively seeking new partnerships to develop the school an international hub of the region – please do reach out to us if you have ideas!

Our staff, students and parents enjoy close working relationships, which lead to great learning and a multitude of individual pathways towards the exciting futures of tomorrow in a caring environment.

As Head of School with school leadership experience in Singapore, Australia, France, Belgium and Germany, I work with my committed team to develop IS Ruhr’s potential as Essen’s centre for international learning for school age children. As an educator, there are many exciting in-context and inquiry-based learning experiences across the curriculum in Essen and in the Ruhrgebiet that we will continue to engage in with our teachers, students and parents over the next years.

Come and experience IS Ruhr in Essen for yourself by contacting our Admissions Manager, Tessa Zuhorn, on +49(0)201-479 104 09 or by email at info@is-ruhr.de.

OUR SCHOOL CONCEPT

We are very proud of our inquiry-based approach to learning and our outstanding International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, Cambridge IGCSE curriculum in Grades 9 and 10 and our International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12.

Our school is an international community that supports its students to find real world links to make learning really matter. The well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us, as we believe that happy students learn best.

We seek inspiration ourselves from our owners, the forward-thinking Swiss education group SBW – Haus des Lernens AG (Schule, Bildung, Weiterbildung), who constantly challenge us to help our students discover what their true passions and interests are. We then help them pursue them as they become learners for life!

Future Skills

Parents, teachers, and educational researchers are pondering over the question of which skills are needed to both thrive in society and actively shape the future.  Our response, in collaboration with our Swiss school operator, SBW House of Learning AG, comprises six Future Skills that go beyond the curriculum and aim to develop and strengthen personality: Passion, Resilience, Global Identity, Sustainability, Thinking outside the box, and Entrepreneurship.

The SBW Model

The SBW Model forms the backbone of our approach, focusing on three key questions: WHY, HOW, and WHAT. It is grounded in a deep understanding of societal needs, ensuring our solutions are relevant and effective.

WHY: We delve into the meaning, purpose, and motivation behind education to inspire and empower our learners.

HOW: Guided by the fractal concept, we embrace a holistic approach to learning, recognizing the interconnectedness of knowledge and skills.

WHAT: Our curriculum emphasizes values, essential skills, and future readiness, preparing individuals to thrive in society.

OUR MISSION

International School Ruhr aims to prepare students to take positive action in an interconnected and changing world. We encourage our students to show respect for themselves, others and the environment and to enjoy learning throughout their lives, so that they become responsible internationally-minded citizens.

IS RUHR OFFERS THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THIS SCHOOL CONCEPT

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP) – EARLY YEARS 1-3

English-speaking preschool programme for children in primary school. At IS Ruhr the primary school is from EY1 – Grade 5.  The PYP is a transdisciplinary curriculum that challenges students in the learning process. Guided by four transdisciplinary themes of global significance, students deepen their learning by developing their conceptual understandings; strengthening their knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas. Learning in the Early Years is play-based. The goal is to encourage them to ask questions, reflect, and update their understanding of society and the world around them.

PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME (PYP) – Grades 1–5

English-speaking primary school programme for children in primary school. At IS Ruhr the primary school is from EY1 – Grade 5. The PYP is a transdisciplinary curriculum that challenges students in the learning process. Guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, students deepen their learning by developing their conceptual understandings, strengthening their knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas. Important is the development of children as whole people including their character, social skills, physical and emotional development, as well as academic skills.

CAMBRIDGE IGCSE PROGRAMME

Internationally recognised middle school qualification for 14 to 16-year-olds. The University of Cambridge’s International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is considered as the worldwide quality standard. Passed IGCSE exams can be recognised as Mittlere Reife after the 10th grade as an equivalent to the German state school leaving certificate.

IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Internationally assessed programme for students aged 16 to 19. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is respected worldwide by leading universities. The curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay. Through the IB DP core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent academic research and undertake a project that often involves community service. In Germany, the IB Diploma is recognised as an university entrance qualification similar to the German Abitur depending on the choice of subjects.

PASTORAL CARE

Tailor-made pastoral care implemented by our teachers. During the sessions, which take place regularly, students can clarify learning questions, look back with their teacher and define new learning goals. The individual personality development of each student is also part of the coaching.
